Abstract

720,486. Screwdrivers. MOORE & WRIGHT (SHEFFIELD), Ltd. Feb. 16, 1953 [Feb. 15, 1952], No. 4095/52. Class 61. A ratchet - operated screwdriver of the archemedian screw type is provided with means for locking the spindle in retracted position, comprising a ball-carrying hollow plug 12 having one end screwed into the outer end of the sleeve 11, the exposed length being provided with radial openings accommodating balls 14 which are retained in the openings by a spring pressed ring 18 interposed between the flange 17 and the extremity of the sleeve. The radial openings are disposed partly in a length of the plug having the bore 15 and partly in a length of the plug having an enlarged bore 16. The balls normally protrude outwards under the pressure of a coil spring 21 disposed between the balls and an abutment ring 22 secured to the plug. The ball retaining ring 18 which is urged into engagement with the flange 17 by an annular spring clip 19 is provided with integral lugs 20 adapted on rotation of the ring to engage and disengage the balls 14 to move them inwardly or to allow of their outward movement. In a modification the coil spring is interposed between the abutment ring 22 and a slidable ring bearing against the balls. To lock the spindle in retracted position the balls are pressed into engagement with the groove 23. In this position the spindle is free to rotate whereby the tool can be used as a ratchet screwdriver or as an ordinary screwdriver by neutralizing the ratchet mechanism.
