Class 142(2) In a loom for weaving ribbons, in which the weft is inserted into the shed by a needle. a bobbin having a supply of selvage thread is situated on the opposite side of the loom to the needle, and is passed through a loop of weft formed by the needle. A weft thread C from a stationary supply is passed through a tensioning device 10 and thence to a guide channel 14 and. through a hole 16 in the weft inserting needle 15. A selvage thread K is wound in a bobbin 66, mounted in a pivot 65 held by a stirrup 64 formed integrally with a thread guide 68, the stirrup being fixed to a toothed segment 42 running in curved guides 40 and meshing with at least one of a pair of pinions 44, 45. Pinions 44, 45 are each integral with a similar pinion which meshes with a toothed segment 48 rocked by means of a cam and lever system. Segment 48 is carried by a bracket 36 attached to the loom frame and terminating in a fork 38 provided with the guides 40 and also supporting the pinions. Pinion 44, 45 are arranged so as to provide an opening between them coinciding with the opening between the arms of fork 38 so that the weft inserter 15 may pass therebetween. The pivot 65 may be flexible, and a screw may be inserted into a threaded orifice so as to deform the walls to adjustably brake the bobbin. Embodiments of the invention are described in which the bobbin follows linear and circular paths. The weft inserter 15 is pivoted on the loom frame and may be actuated by an arm 20 having a slidable sleeve 22 connected to the sley by an arm 28, an arm 26 pivoted on the loom frame also being connected to the sleeve. The arm 26 may be dispensed with and the sleeve 22 guided in a guide way. Alternatively a rack mounted on the sley may mesh with a pinion integral with the weft inserter.
