Abstract

718,475. Starting prime-movers; generating arrangements. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 28, 1951], No. 22323/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 38(4) A starting and control system for an alternator driven by an internal combustion engine comprises a paralleling switch for connecting and disconnecting the alternator to or from a power line, an electric starter motor for the engine, means to de-energize the starter motor, an engine governor normally acting to stop the engine, a solenoid energizable to render the governor operative to cause the engine to run at no-load speed, the governor having electrical speed setting means to cause operation at no-load and full-load speeds, and limit switches operable by the governor to de-energize the speed setting means. The no-load limit switch serves also to control the opening of the paralleling switch and to de-energize the governor solenoid. Control means operable upon closure of the paralleling switch energize the speed setting means to cause operation of the engine at full-load speed and to retain the governor solenoid energized. The system also comprises an electrical master control, including a time delay stop relay, and de-energizable to energize the speed setting means to cause operation of the engine at no-load and energizable to energize the starting motor and governor solenoid. The starter motor is de-energized by means responsive to generator voltage, which means also controls the paralleling switch. The system further includes a motor-operated recloser switch having contacts to energize intermittently the master control and contacts for stopping the recloser switch motor, engine starting switch means to energize the recloser switch motor, and engine stop means which become effective upon defective operation of the engine or generator to stop the engine and initiate electrical warnings by shunting the master control. The time delay stop relay limits the duration of the energization of the starter motor. The system also includes automatic fuel control for bringing the engine to synchronous speed and automatic control of the closure of the paralleling switch.
