An electric igniter for a burner incorporates a heating unit comprising a coil 19 of resistance wire wound on an insulating core 20, said unit being detachably fitted to one end of a tubular shaft 24 having a rod 25 disposed coaxially therein, the tube 24 and rod 25 serving as current conductors for the coil 19, one end of the latter being connected to an annular contact member 21, and the other end of the coil 19 being connected to a conductor 22 passing through the core 20 and terminating in a contact pad 23 abutting against an end of the rod 25, and the shaft 24 has screwed thereto a threaded plug 26 on which is threaded a sleeve 27 having a shoulder 28 engaging the annular contact member 21. Thus, when the sleeve 27 is screwed on to the plug 26 the pad 23 is brought into contact with the end of the rod 25, which is formed as a pad 31. The coil 19 is protected by a cage comprising bars 29 extending between the sleeve 27 and a ring 30. For manual operation the shaft 24 may be provided with a handle incorporating a switch actuable by a push button or trigger. The igniter may, alternatively, be mounted in a guideway in a framework attached to a furnace for movement by an electric motor into and out of its operative position for igniting a burner. The latter may be fixed or similarly movable by an electric motor. When the burner fuel is ignited the flame may actuate a heat or light responsive device to switch off the supply of current to the igniter coil and to energize the electric motor to retract the igniter. If after lighting the burner should be extinguished, then the heat or light-responsive device cuts off the fuel supply to the burner and causes the igniter to advance into the furnace. According to the Provisional Specification the igniter may embody a resistance wire wound on a threaded fused silica tube, the ends of the resistance wire being welded to end caps, e.g. of heat resisting steel, the caps being shaped to serve both as resistor supports and as electrical connections and the parts being cemented together to form a unit for detachably mounting in a handle.
