Abstract

Aqueous solutions or iron and cobalt compounds containing, when trivalent ions are present, at most 25 per cent. of the metal ions in trivalent form and the rest in divalent form are prepared; hydroxides or carbonates of the said metals are precipitated simultaneously, successively in the same reaction vessel or separately with subsequent mixing, treated whilst wet with oxidizing agents and the product dried to form a magnetizable oxide in powder form. Preferred features include the use of a few, e.g. 2-7 mols per cent. of the cobalt compound; precipitating by means of caustic alkali or water-soluble carbonate; heating the dried product in the presence of oxidizing gases to below about 500 DEG C. In the examples, ammonia and sodium hydroxide are used as precipitating agents; oxidation is performed by means of caustic soda/sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate; in one case the product is heated at 280 DEG C, for 6 hours. The remanence and coercity of the products are indicated. The composition of the metal oxides is said to correspond generally with that of the ferrites.
