Abstract

A grease composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil thickened with a calcium barrier or lithium soap of a C12-C24 fatty acid, minor proportions of petrolatum and an ester-type oiliness agent, and 0.1-1 per cent. by weight of a C12-C24 fatty acid. The oiliness agent is a natural fatty oil, isopropyl oleate, the isopropyl ester of oxidized paraffin wax acids, or a dialkyl ester of a dicarboxylic aliphatic acid which is a homologue of succinic acid; specified compounds are the adipates and sebacates of 2-ethyl hexanol C8 Oxo alcohol and C9 Oxo alcohol, castor oil, rapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, teaseed oil, coconut oil, palm oil, whale oil, shark liver oil and degras. Fatty acids referred to are palmitic, stearic hydroxystearic, oleic and ricinoleic acids and palm oil fatty acids. The fatty acid used to form the soap may be one of those mentioned above; acids derived from the hydrogenation of fish oils are also referred to. Aluminium stearate may be added to the greases.
