Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile threads are prepared by extruding a dimethyl formamide solution of the polymer into an aqueous coagulating bath containing potassium acetate, calcium chloride or zinc chloride, bromide or iodide. The dimethyl formamide may be recovered subsequently from the bath by solvent extraction with a methylene chloride solvent (see Group IV (b)). Specifications 584,548 and 706,263 and U.S.A. Specification 2,467,553 are referred to.ALSO:Dimethyl formamide is recovered from its aqueous solution by extracting with methylene chloride or with a homogeneous mixed solvent containing at least 70 per cent by weight of methylene chloride and up to 30 per cent by weight of a substantially water-immiscible inert organic solvent miscible with methylene chloride and having a specific gravity less than 1.0 such as benzene and separating the dimethyl formamide from the extract by distillation. In place of benzene, there may be used toluene, aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-heptane and n-octane and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as allyl chloride and amyl chloride. The process finds application in the recovery of dimethyl formamide from its aqueous solutions obtained when polyacrylonitrile in dimethyl formamide solution is extruded into aqueous coagulating baths such as are described in Specifications 584,548 and 706,263, [Group IV (a)], and U.S.A. Specification 2,467,553. An example is given. According to the Provisional Specification the solvent consists of or contains a major proportion of methylene chloride.
