Abstract
715,639. Railway rail joints. GRONLUND, J. E. Feb. 4, 1952, No. 2958/52. Class 104 (2) In a rail joint a short length of rail 13 of the same cross-section at the rails 10, 10' to be joined is inserted between the rail ends 11, 12 and is formed at each end with a socket or pin 16, 17 engaging a similar pin or socket 18, 19 in the rail ends and a base plate 25 is provided having upstanding ribs 26, 27 to engage the flanges of the rails 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and the insert 13 and a longitudinal depending strengthening rib 28. The rails are clamped between fish-plates 20, 21 and are secured to the base-plate 25 by clamping plates 30 with bolts and nuts 29, 31. The bolts 29 pass through slots an the flanges of the rails 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and insert 13 and holes in the base plate 25. Screws 36 formed with metal threads 37 adjacent the head and wood threads 38 over the remaining shank portion secure the rails 10, 10<SP>1</SP> and the base plate 25 to the sleepers 35.
