Class 46 A filter element a, Fig. 1, for use in a filter of the edge filtration type comprising a plurality of superimposed washers assembled about a central passage and subjected to axial compression has its outer edge 1 of serrated or undulating form. Its inner edge 2 may be similarly serrated or undulated and the elements may be located by a vertical strip engaging opposite undulations in the inner periphery 2. In a modification the inner and outer peripheries 10. 9, Fig. 4, are such that the shortest distance between every point on the inner and the outer peripheries is substantially constant.
