Class 40 (4) [Also in Group XXXVIII] A method of inspecting or testing an object 10 for defects such as a very shallow discontinuity 11 (see Groups XXXVIII) comprises generating surface waves along the respective surface of the object by transmitting ultra,- sonic vibrations to said object at an angle of incidence #<SP>3</SP> greater than the critical angle for shear waves within the object. A quartz crystal 15 fed by a pulse generator 16 is supported on a coupling wedge 20 at an angle #<SP>3</SP> to the surface 12 such that shear waves (and, therefore, the faster longitudinal waves) are totally reflected and only surface waves, Fig. 5 (not shown), are set up in the object 10. The critical angle for steel using a lucite wedge is stated to be 57 degrees and the angle #<SP>3</SP> in this case must, therefore, be greater than 57 degrees. Specification 663,064 is referred to.
