Abstract

714,257. Sorting fruit and the like. HODGINS, R. D. SCOBLE-. Sept. 15, 1952 [June 15, 1951], No. 14305/51. Class 117 In an apparatus for sorting apples &c. the fruit is fed by means of an endless belt conveyer 4 to a conical rotor 1, which is cushioned with sponge rubber or the like, and is provided with a stationary, curved bar 2 forming a diverging gap with the rotor's periphery. A stationary guide 3 directs the fruit to the commencement of the measuring gap and the gap may be adjusted by rotating the bar 2 and its carrier to about a centre and securing it by means of a nut 5. Alternatively the bar 2 may be in the form of individually adjustable segments or may be slidable in a suitably curved member. The measuring bar may be located above the edge of the rotor, Figs. 3A, 3B (not shown), in which case the bar is adjustable vertically. A plate 9 deflects the fruit from the conveyer to the rotor. The return run of the conveyer may be used for rejected fruit. A number of measuring bars may be provided for each rotor, each bar being supplied by a conveyer, and by means of suitably arranged guides 3 two or more lines of fruit may be dealt with at the same time. Collecting bins for the sized fruit can be placed in the required positions along the measuring gap. The Provisional Specification refers to an arrangement in which a moving belt rotates objects to be sorted against a series of stepped, adjustable, grading members arranged in a straight line.
