Classes 59 and 86 An apparatus for preparing foundry sand comprises a horizontal cylinder rotatable about a longitudinal axis, an inlet and outlet at opposite ends, a centrifugal device in the cylinder to fling the sand repeatedly against the inner wall of the cylinder, and guide plates for imparting axial feed to the sand, and if necessary, one or more pressure rollers extending through the length of the cylinder for subjecting the sand to additional pressing and kneading treatment. In Figs. 3 and 4, a cylinder 2 which is closed by stationary end plates 6, 7 is rotatably mounted on rollers 4, and the centrifugal device comprises blades 11 mounted on a rotatable shaft 10 which extends through the end plates. The cylinder 2 and shaft 10 are driven by a motor 33 through belt and pulley gearing. An undriven roller 30, and if required, additional rollers 31, 32 are mounted to rotate against the wall' of the cylinder 2. The rollers are mounted in rocking levers 35, 36 and the gaps between the rollers and the inner periphery of the cylinder decrease progressively in the direction of movement of the material. A row of inclined guide plates 20, 21 is fixed within the cylinder 2. Used moulding sand with fresh moulded sand added, is fed into the cylinder through a funnel 1 and is caught by the blades 11 and is flung against the cylinder wall so that the clay particles are battered and the various components intermixed. The guide plates 20 feed the sand to the rollers 30, 31 and 32 which subject the sand to further pressing and grinding so that the nodules of clay in the fresh sand are completely disintegrated, ground and distributed. The guide plates 21. serve to deflect the materials axially through the casing to the opposite end where it is discharged by a guide plate 25, and the blades 11 may be set at an inclination to impart a slight axial movement to the material, In another embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the rollers 30, 31 and 32 are omitted.
