Abstract

713,678. Wet presses of paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Dec. 6, 1951, No. 28618/51. Class 96 A wet web W from a Fourdrinier papermaking machine wire-cloth 10 is contacted by the press felt 13 of ,the first wet press, only at the nip 15 between a plain upper roll 16 and a lower roll 17, the felt 13 covering the whole suction zone 18, so that at the on-coming and off-going sides of the nip, air, and water expressed from the web W are drawn through the felt, the air opening the pores of the felt 13 and partially drying it. In modifications, (1) the wet press 16, 17 is followed by a wet press with the upper roll as the suction roll, and its suction zone covered by an upper felt; (2) a conventional wet, suction press is followed by a turning press similar to the press illustrated in Fig. 1, but for smoothing the wire side of the web etc.; (3) the web from the wire-cloth is passed about a plain central roll flanked on each side by a suction roll and press felt, these rolls &c. constituting a horizontal, double wet press incorporating the inventive principles at each nip etc.; (4) the web from a cylinder machine is carried by a pick-up felt through two suction presses through which a cover felt is also directed; (5) a wet press has suction boxes in both upper and lower rolls; (6) a suction press roll directs a web, which has passed through a suction couch press and a wet press. against a Yankee dryer drum, and, after the web has been warmed thereon, it contacts a blotter felt at the nip made between a suction roll and the Yankee drum; and (7) the lower dryer felt is trained well clear of one of the lower drums of a bank of dryer drums, so that a blotter felt, and its suction press roll. and guide rolls may be accommodated in and clear of the loop thus formed in the lower dryer felt.
