Abstract

A flame-resistant insulating composition for a metal conductor comprises 60 to 90 per cent. polyethylene and 40 to 100 per cent. of a mixture comprising an organic chlorine bearing compound, which is compatible with polyethylene, and antimony trioxide or zinc borate. Specified chlorine compounds are chlorinated paraffin and chlorinated naphthalene. Lubricants, stabilisers, plasticisers and fillers may be added and include calcium and zinc stearates, tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, phenoxypropylene oxide, basic lead silicate, monohydrated tribasic lead maleate and a filler known as "Samtocel." In the Examples, the proportion by weight of antimony oxide or zinc borate to chlorine bearing compound ranges from about 1:1 to 2:1.
