Abstract
713,171. Microscopes. COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4630/51. Class 97(1) A microscope is so arranged that the imageforming light passes from the objective to the eyepiece by way of a concave reflecting surface which causes an image of the back focal plane of the objective to be focused between the surface and the eyepiece. The invention may be applied to a phase-contrast microscope. As shown in Fig. 1 the objective 2 forms an image 4 of the object 1 light from which is reflected by a semi-reflecting surface of a prism 5 to a concave spherical mirror 6 which forms an image 8, at unit magnification, viewed in the eyepiece 9. The mirror 6 also forms an image 7 of the back focal plane of the objective at which image the phase plate is located. A field lens may be placed adjacent the image 4 and a prism or reflectors may be placed between the image 4 and the beam-splitting prism 5 to allow the axis of the eyepiece to be inclined to that of the objective. P'olarizing means may also be employed in the system. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 light from the objective 2 is reflected by the surface 5d of a prism to form an image of the object 1 adjacent the concave spherical mirror 6, an image of this image being focused by a lens 8, after reflection at the surface 5e, for viewing by an inclined monocular or binocular eyepiece 9a or for photomicrography through a tube 10b. The mirror 6 forms an image of the back focal plane of the objective at the phase plate 7a. Polarization filters 14a, 15a may be provided to vary the contrast of the image for example as described in Specification 647,191. Specification 647,207 also is referred to.
