Abstract
713,039. Toothed gearing. KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT CORPORATION. Feb 13, 1952 [Dec. 4, 1951], No. 3815/52. Class 80 (1) Backlash between a driving gear 11 and a driven gear 12 is prevented by a coiled spring 25, one end of which is secured to a pin 27 on the gear 12, while the other end is attached to the shaft of a plate 19 which is in frictional engagement, though a spring metal disc 22, with a fixed panel 21. On rotation of the gear 12. the spring 25 is wound up until the pin 27 engages an arm 30 on the plate 19. The plate 19 is then rotated against the frictional resistance of the disc 22 and the spring 25 thus remains wound up and maintains a constant torque on the gear 12 so as to eliminate backlash. The plate 19 may be formed integrally with its shaft and the shaft may be retained in the panel by a collar engaging an annular groove therein. It is stated that the device.may be employed to eliminate backlash in both directions of rotation. The device is shown applied to a gear train between a motor driving a load and a second motor rotating in synchronism therewith.
