[Also in Groups V and X] Reinforcing wires W for concrete units are tensioned by fixing their ends to a block 7 by wedges, Fig. 8 (not shown), fixing the wires to a cross-head 5 mounted on rams 9, moving the rams, and then securing the rams in position by wedges 11. In a modification, Fig. 6, the wires are secured to a block 13 on a sliding carriage 14, the carriage is then drawn back by rotating a winding drum 12 for the wires, and the carriage is held in its drawn back position by pawls 15 which engage a rack 16.
