Abstract

712,803. Piezo-electric generators. Mc- CULLOCH MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1952 [Sept. 4, 1951], No. 19999/52. Class 35 [Also in Group XXVII] A high-voltage generator, particularly for the ignition of internal-combustion engines, comprises a piezo-electric element to which is delivered a suitably timed blow to generate the current, the element being compressively spring-loaded to prevent shattering when the applied strain is released. In one form, Fig. 1, a ceramic barium titanate piezo-electric element 17 is encased by an insulating body 18 inside a metal shell 10, a cam-operated hammer 20 delivering an impact at the top end, while the output to be delivered to an ignition plug 42 is taken from a terminal 21 at the bottom. A metal anvil 19 is secured to the top of the element 17 and is kept pressed downwards to prevent tensile stresses in the element by a bow-spring 23 which has an opening through which the crown of the anvil passes. The hammer is uged downwards by a series of spring washers 26 and is forced up for the blow through push-rods 27 by a stepped cam 30 driven from the I.C. engine through a freewheel ratchet 34. The spring pressure is adjusted by a screw 13 and the hammer stroke is adjusted by raising the element by means of a wedge 39. In a modified form, Fig. 5, the element is insulated by a shell 109 and 'supported in an opening in a body 105. The anvil 110 is pressed downwards by a bow-spring 120, while the hammer 126 is energized by an adjustable spring 134. The element is supported on an insulating plate 112 on a bar 113 through which the conductor 111 passes. The hammer and push-rod assembly 110, 113 is resiliently supported for vertical motion by spring-arms 121, 127. Fig. 7 shows a system of compressing a pair of elements 53, 54 in series by means of a lever 48 and cam 47, the output from'the terminal 56 being derived from the two elements in parallel. Connections are also shown for placing the elements electrically in series or series parallel. It is shown how the element may be carried on an engine flywheel and be actuated by stationary cam. In Fig. 9 a diverter is used to prevent secondary sparks from the piezo-electric elements from reaching the sparking-plug 94. This diverter comprises a metal disc 89 rotating with the operating cam 88 and having a cut-away part 90 so that it is in proximity with the diverting electrode 91 only during the inoperative period.
