Abstract

712,789. Valve accessories. VULCAN RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 13, 1952 [June 7, 1951], No. 12087/52. Class 135 To enable the initial work on the valve plate of a large goggle valve to be carried out before the final dimensions of the seating faces of the valve plate are known holes 4, 5, Fig. 1, are formed in the valve plate 3 and annular and disc seat members 8, 9 respectively are later mounted in channel section retainers 13, Fig. 2. The retainers are bent around the seat members and finally welded within the holes to leave a clearance between the seat members and the retainers. In a modification, a plate of reduced thickness relative to the thickness of the seat members is used. In this case, the retainer channels are replaced by plates 13a, Fig. 4, disposed on opposite faces of the valve plate 3 and at diametrically opposite places about the holes 4 5. Three of the plates are welded to the plate 3 to overlap the seat members, the fourth being secured to the plate 3 by screws to permit easy removal of and, if necessary, replacement of the seat members. The valve plate 3 may be made as a standard part and the seat members 8, 9, made from various materials to suit particular requirements, e.g. from steel, having annular grooves in their faces mounting gaskets of stainless steel or copper alloy.
