Abstract

Molten metals are refined at high temperatures in vessels provided with refractory linings by a stream of oxidizing gas blown centrally and vertically on to the surface, the pressure of the gas at the surface of the bath being such that the gas does not penetrate into the bath and creates a movement in the bath downwards at the centre and upwards at the sides. The gas, which may be oxygen of at least 97 per cent. purity, may be applied during melting of the solid charge. The circulation of the bath results in cooler metal washing the refractory lining and preventing its deterioration. This circulation may be assisted by giving the vessel an hemispherical or similarly shaped bottom. Steel containing .05-.1 per cent. carbon and at least 10 times as much manganese may be produced from pig iron containing 2-4 per cent. manganese, using 100 cubic metres of oxygen and 70 kg. of slag per ton of steel.
