Abstract

712,480. Photo-electric control systems. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. Aug. 30, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 21966/50. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group VIII] In apparatus for folding sheets &c. delivered by an ironer and comprising a conveyer 1 driven at a speed independent of that of the ironer (see Group VIII), means 16, 17 for gripping and raising the leading edge of a sheet is under the. control of a single photo-cell 35 the beam to which is interrupted by the passing sheet, timedelay means provides a predetermined delay in operating the gripping means after the photocell is actuated by the leading edge only of the sheet, and means is provided for varying this delay manually in accordance with the speed of the ironer. Conveyer 1 is arranged to run slightly faster than the ironer. When the leading edge of a sheet interrupts the beam from a lamp 36 to photo-cell 35, the timing condenser of an electronic timer commences to charge. After a charging time determined by the setting of a potentiometer 38, grippers 16, 17 close. The potentiometer dial is calibrated in ironer speeds, the dial being used in conjunction with a given folder speed. The grippers open when the trailing edge of the sheet passes the light beam, the position of lamp 36 and photo-cell 35 being so adjusted relative to the grippers, in accordance with the conveyer speed, that the leading edge when released will fall onto the trailing edge.
