Abstract

712,114. Photo-electric control systems. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1952 [Aug. 3, 1951], No. 18498/51 Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for maintaining the image of a light source capable of slight lateral movement on a required optical axis by means of a concave mirror, comprises means for focusing the image between two photo cells, so that uneven illumination of the cells produced by movement of the source provides a voltage for rotating the concave mirror to reposition the image on the axis. As shown in the Figure the light from arc electrodes 2 is imaged by concave mirror 3 at a point S on the optical axis A - A of a spectrograph, whereby light from S is focused by a lens 6 to illuminate two photo cells 7 by an equal amount. Movement of the image S from the axis A - A unbalances the illumination of photo cells 7, whose output after amplification is applied to a moving coil movement 8 of the type described in Specification 677,739, [Group XXXV], to rotate the mirror 3 about an axis 4, bringing the image S back on to the optical axis A - A. An alternative moving coil movement employing a loud-speaker type permanent magnet is also described.
