Abstract

711,987. Releasable cockpit canopies for aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 23, 1953 [Jan. 25, 1952], No. 2110/52. Class 4 An aircraft cockpit hood is connected to the aircraft structure by tubular bolts each loaded with a separate explosive charge, firing means being provided to detonate the charges of all the said bolts simultaneously. The canopy 1 is connected to a light metal frame 2 by bolts 3 passing through rubber sleeves 5, the frame being formed at its rear edge with pins that engage in hooked members attached to the aircraft structure and so shaped that the released canopy swings rearwardly through a predetermined angle before being carried away by the relative airflow. The frame 2 rests, through the medium of rubber cushions 7, on a coaming tube 8 forming part of the cockpit structure and is retained thereon by a number of hollow bolts 9 each containing an explosive charge. Each bolt is formed with a neck portion of reduced cross section which is fractured when the explosive charge is fired so that the canopy is released and swept away. The hinges along the rear edge of the canopy may be dispensed with and a separate door is provided in the fuselage for normal use.
