711,942. Continuous casting. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Oct. 20, 1952 [Oct. 25, 1951], No. 26324/52 Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2) A continuous-casting mould-assembly comprises an open ended liner 11, an inlet manifold 27 for cooling fluid, and a number of cooling- fluid guide tubes 12 connected with the manifold and extending along the external surface of the liner to an unrestricted discharge opening, the guide tubes being in heat-exchange contact with and structurally supporting the mould liner. The liner 11 and tubes 12, preferably of brass, are enclosed by a sheet metal casing 35 spaced from the tubes and connected thereto by bolts 37, the space between the tubes and casing being filled with an initially plastic material 41 such as concrete. A refractory 42 is installed above the assembly. The liner and tube assembly is preferably made in halves 11a, 11b, bolted together at 47. Making moulds.-Straight tubes are filled with a low melting-point alloy and machined to remove a length of one side, between the positions 30, 13, and silver-soldered in a furnace to plates 11a, 11 b, together with blocks 38, 46 and bars 45. The tubes 12 are then again filled with a low melting-point alloy and the assemblies bent to shape, machined to size, bolt holes drilled and tapped, and ends of tubes 12 bent to the desired shape. Gaps between the sides 31 of the tubes are filled with silver solder.
