Class 5 (1) A recess 8 merging into a guide surface 9 is provided behind the blade 4 of a tobacco cutting machine to direct cut tobacco away from the machine, the mouth y of the recess being approximately at right angles to the cutter and its depth y being approximately four times its width x. The recess may be formed of elliptical, cylindrical or angular shape, Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The surface 9 may be convex at 9<SP>1</SP> towards its further end.
