Class 42 (1) A method of uniting layers of thermoplastic material comprises holding at least two restricted area portions thereof lapped in mutual contact while leaving an outer surface of the lapped portions uncovered, maintaining the parts of the layers beyond the said portions below the fusing temperature of the material of the layers, and exposing the said uncovered surface to a heat radiating element, thereby to fuse the portions, without mechanical contact between them and the said element. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the layers 19 may be held between a stationary member 13 having a cavity 15 which contains a heat radiator element 16 such as an electrical resistor wire, and opens as a slot in the upper surface of the member 13, and a member 17, mounted on arms 22 which are mounted on a rod 23 pivoted in brackets 24 on the base plate 14, and biased upwardly by a spring 26 acting on an arm 25. The member 13 may be cooled, as by circulation of liquid through a pipe 21, or by blowing air on to it. A latch 30. acting on a lug 28 is provided to hold the member 17 in lowered position, and is connected by a link 33 to the armature 34 of a solenoid 35, by actuation of which it may be released. Lowering of the member 17 operates the arm 37 of a switch' 36 ; closure of the switch 36 allows current to flow through the heater 16, and puts into operation an electronic circuit, which, after a time delay, allows current to flow through the solenoid 35, releasing the latch 30 and thus permitting the member 17 to rise, the switch 36 then reopening. In alternative constructions the anvil member may be unslotted, and the heat radiator may be included in a groove in the holding member; both members may be straight, or they may be rollers or pulleys between which the layers are passed, or the holding member may be rolled over the stationarily-held layers. The cavity in the-holding member may straddle a projecting tongue on the anvil, which may be mounted cantilever fashion. Or, the layers may be held by hand or by clamps across a support and a heating member brought closely adjacent to. the portions lying thereover, without contacting the same, or the heater may be included in a cavity in the support; or both methods of heating may be used. In a further modification (Fig. 11), the layers 64, to be joined, are passed between a belt 60, driven by a pulley 59, and a pulley 61, consisting of two spaced cheek discs, forming between them a groove. A heating element is mounted on a stationary carrier between the discs. Two or more closely spaced seam lines may be made during a single operation, e.g. by providing the holding member 13, Fig. 5, with two slots 15, each furnished with a heating element 16 ; the member 17 may then be provided with two tongues such as 18.
