711,127. Endless chain excavators. CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. Oct. 27, 1952, No. 26959/52. Class 68(1) An endless chain excavator for digging ditches comprises a frame 8 about which circulates a chain 30 carrying digging implements 52, 53, the frame being in a vertical plane extending laterally from the tractor 1 on which is mounted a yoke 2 from which said frame 8 is supported by pivoted arms 4, 5. A brace 22 between the frame and the tractor absorbs the lateral thrust exerted on the frame 8 when it is in a digging position and the tractor is advancing. In one embodiment the frame comprises a triangular structure 9, 10, 11 at the apices of which are positioned guide rollers 32, 33, 34. Two 32, 33 of said rollers are adjustably secured on the frame by arms 35, 37 bolted to said frame, whilst the third 34 is driven from the power take off of the tractor by chain and sprocket gearing 50, 49, a telescopic shaft connected by universal joints 46, 45 to the sprockets 49, and a shaft 43 of a gear box 40 on the output shaft of which is the roller 34. In a second embodiment a fourth roller is adjustably mounted on the member 11 of the frame 8. The adjustable mounting of the rollers permits variation of the configuration of the excavating chain. The frame 8 is raised and lowered, the arms 4, 5 rotating about pivots 6, 7, on operation of a fluid-actuated jack 25. Each link of the chain has secured thereto a scraper blade 52 or 53, alternate links having a blade 52 projecting outwardly and bent to form a lip as well as projecting laterally at one end beyond the side of the chain.
