Abstract

<PICT:0710158/III/1> Apparatus for the fractional distillation of multi-component liquid mixtures comprises an externally-heated cylindrical tube disposed in a vertical or inclined position, an inlet for introducing the liquid onto the inner surface of the tube, a blade-bearing rotor passing axially through the tube by means of which the liquid is spread as a film on the inner surface of the tube, partitions which rotate with the rotor and extend to the liquid film so that the partitions divide the tube in an axial direction into two or more chambers, and outlets for withdrawing vapours from the individual chambers to separate condensers. The apparatus is suitable for the fractionation of temperature-sensitive mixtures under reduced pressure. Liquid is fed through pipe A into externally-heated cylinder B, and is spread over the inner surface of the cylinder by blades C or rotor D. The inner space of the cylinder is subdivided into four chambers by three circular discs F lying perpendicular to the axis and rotating with the blades, or by sectors arranged between the blades. The vapours formed in the individual chambers are withdrawn from the top and base of the jacketed cylinder and through two openings G in the side, into four separate condensers J, which are maintained at the same pressure by vacuum pump K. High-boiling liquid withdrawn from the base of the heated cylinder is spun by blades C into channel O.
