Abstract

709,499. Spray burners. RAY, W. R. April 23, 1952, No. 10209/52. Classes 75 (1) and 75 (3) In a rotary oil burner comprising a rotary combustion chamber 100 having a generally circular side wall 15 and an end wall, and to which air and fuel-oil is supplied, an opening is provided in the side wall 15 which is small relative to the open end of the combustion chamber and through which oil can pass into a space, defined around the chamber, to be ignited therein. As shown the combustion chamber comprises a double-walled bowlshaped structure 13, 15 having a coned end section 14 defining a restricted mouth, the structure being welded to a frame 17, 18 fixed, together with an air impeller 22 to a hollow shaft 20 of an oil-immersed electric motor 21. Fuel-oil is supplied via a conduit 62 to the hollow shaft 20 leading to a supply tube 40 extending into the combustion chamber coaxially therewith. The supply tube 40 terminates in four equi-spaced short radial jets 41 aligned with cavities 44 formed in a concentric tube 42 screwed to the motor shaft 20 to surround the supply tube 40. Long radial jets 43 lead from the cavities 44 and are aligned with slots 45 in a vertical closed-ended cylinder 24 keyed to the frame 17. Keyed coaxially to the cylinder 24 is an inverted cup-shaped member 30 having a flared bottom end, facing the end wall of the combustion chamber, from which gradually deepening recesses 37 extend to provide oil flow paths for oil ejected thereinto through the slots 45. Aligned air holes 35, 36 formed in the cylinder 24 and cup 30 above the fuel jets lead into an annular downwardly opening space defined by a skirt 34 on the cup 30. Surrounding the combustion chamber are a series of concentric walls 74, 75, 76, 77, the walls 74, 75 defining an annular air passage and the wall 76 defining an ignition space, there being an electric igniter element 80 fitted in the wall 76. A series of holes 98, 99 formed respectively in the walls 15, 13 of the combustion chamber allow for passage of air into the chamber and, at starting, passage of oil from the chamber into the ignition space, the holes 98 being more numerous than the holes 99. The motor 20 is mounted in an air trunk 50 having supply and exhaust ducts 55, 54. The exhaust duct 54 has an adjustable vent 87, 88 and a motor operated adjustable vent 85, 84. The supply duct leads around the motor to the air impeller which discharges the air into a chamber 71 having openings leading to a chamber 70 and to the exhaust duct 54, the proportions of air taking the alternative paths being determined by the vent settings. From the chamber 70 the air flows to the combustion and ignition chambers along the various paths provided, as indicated by the arrows on Fig. 1. In operation, oil is supplied equally to the jets 43 via the very short jets 41 despite any small eccentricity of the structure and is centrifuged into the recesses 37 and caused to flow around the rim of the inverted cup 30 on to the side wall 15 which it climbs under centrifugal force and then passes through the openings 98, 99 into the ignition space. The atomized oil is there ignited and heats the combustion chamber eventually to vaporize and ignite the oil therein, thereby stopping the flow of oil to the ignition space. The igniter element 80 is then out of the path of any flame. Alternative ignition means may be used in the ignition space instead of the element 80. Specification 697,563 is referred to.
