Abstract

708,622. Impregnated paper &c. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 27, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 18768/50. Class 96 Paper &c. made on a conventional papermaking machine, with at least 25 per cent. of non-fibrillatable filaments, e.g. of regenerated protein, rayon or Wool, or of difficultly fibrillatable fibres, e.g. of jute, hemp, or sisal which ate not beaten much, ranging from # to 1¢ ins. long and with the rest of the fibres lightly fibrillated, has a porous structure such that impregnants of a particle size up to 2 Á can be absorbed throughout the paper &c., and is impregnated with a natural or synthetic high polymer or polymeric condensation product, e.g. natural rubber latex, butadiene-styrene, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile copolymers, or polythene. The rubber latex may contain 10 to 60 per cent. solids and the rubber content of the dried paper may be 50 to 100 per cent. Immediately after impregnation, it may be mangled between rollers having a clearance of ¥ of the unimpregnated paper thickness and dried at 50 to 100‹C. by air heating. Melamine-for,maldehyde resin, and a de-flocculating agent. e.g. locust bean gum, may be added at the beater. Half-rotted cotton waste, or Kraft &c. fibres may be included.
