[Also in Group XL(c)] Indicating-apparatus having a dial plate 15 of poorly heat-resistant, transparent material illuminated by laterally incident light from one or more. incandescent lamps has a lightconducting connecting piece of transparent, better heat - resistant material 17 between the dial and lamp or lamps 11. As shown in Fig. 2, between a vertical dial plate 15, for example, of polystyrene, and an incandescent lamp 11, a trapezoidal connecting piece 17 of transparent sheet material is arranged at right angles to the plate 15, the material of the piece 17 weakening at a higher temperature than polystyrene, being, for example, polymethylmethacrylate or glass. The piece 17 engages the dial plate 15 along a surface 19 at approximately 45 degrees to the plate 15 and may be secured by a transparent adhesive. This arrangement allows air to flow freely round the lamp for cooling. Alternatively, the plate 17 or two plates may be arranged in line with the plate 15. The piece or pieces 17 may be coloured to give a colour effect to the dial 15. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the lamp 11 is arranged in a cupshaped cavity in a rod 21 which fits into a circular aperture in a dial plate 23 and has a reentrant surface shaped to reflect light at rightangles.
