Abstract

708,075. Automatic speed control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 29, 1952 [July 6, 1951], No. 16090/51. Class 38(4) The invention relates to systems for automatically controlling the relative speed of two motors in accordance with the resultant output of two D.C. tachometer generators connected in series opposition and driven by the respective motors. To avoid the sudden change in the polarity of of the voltage drop across the brushes of the tachometer generators which takes place when the current in the output circuit changes direction, a biasing current is caused to flow through the tacho-generators to prevent a reversal of the net current over the range of speed variation. This invention is described with reference to a pull-through slitter for a strip rolling mill, wherein the edges of the strip 10 cut off by the slitter 11 are fed to a scrap-cutter 15, driven by a manually controlled Ward- Leonard set 16, 17 and the speed of the strip is controlled by varying the field of a Ward-Leonard generator 14 supplying the reel motor 13 to maintain the speed of the strip relative to scrap cutter 15. According to the invention tacho-generators 18, 19 driven by the cutter 15 and the slitter 11 respectively are connected in a bridge circuit with resistors 21, 22, and a D.C. biasing current obtained from the generator 17 is applied across one diagonal of the bridge, and the output signal is taken from the other diagonal to a control amplifier 20.
