707,596. Ratchet gearing. BRITISH TOOL & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and JONES, W. R. Aug. 20 1952 [Aug. 20, 1951], No. 19530/51. Class 80 (3) A reversible ratchet device for a wrench or other hand tool comprises an internally-toothed driving ring 12 having radial teeth and rightangle notches and two oppositely-acting pawls 18, 19 which are slidable in a slot 20 in a driven carrier 16, the pawls being urged apart by an interposed spring 21 and being moved from one end to the other of the slot to effect a drive in one or other direction by adjustment of a rotatable catch plate 22. The plate 22, which has an externally serrated rim providing a finger grip, is rotatably attached to a boss 26 of the carrier 16 and is located thereon in either of two positions by a spring-loaded plunger 33 and recesses 34. The plate 22 has a radial slot 31 and two pins 32 which straddle abutments formed on the pawls so that on adjustment of the plate 22 one or other pawl is retracted into the slot 20 by a pin 32, the other pawl being thereby urged by the spring 21 into engagement with the ratchet teeth. The carrier 16 and plate 22 have flanges which engage rebates in opposite faces of the apertured head 11 of the wrench, and the carrier 16 is formed with a projecting square shank for engagement with a part to be turned. The pins 32 may be dispensed with and the pawl abutments engage the edges of a radial or arcuate slot in the plate 22.
