Abstract

706,728. Injection-moulding ceramic material; refractory compositions. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1951 [Nov. 28, 1950], No. 25367/51. Addition to 671,371. Classes 22 and 87 (2) A ceramic article is made by injecting into a mould a mix comprising ceramic material, thermoplastic resin, one or more waxes vaporising between the temperatures of 300‹F, and that at which the resin is removed and an oil vaporising below 300‹F., and after moulding heating the moulded article at progressively raised temperatures to vaporise first the oil, then the wax and finally to remove resin and fire the article. Thus, the moulded article is removed from the mould and heated at 125‹F., rising in steps to 450‹F. At 125-300‹F. the oil comes off, thereby forming minute.pores in the article, 'then the wax vaporises between 300‹F. and the temperature at which the resin is removed, viz. 400-450‹F., the vaporised wax passing through the minute pores made by the vaporised oil, and finally resin passes off, probably in the form of decomposition products. At this heating stage only 75 per cent. of the resin may be removed, the remainder being removed by the subsequent firing. More than one oil and wax, vaporising in sequence, may be used. The ceramic material may be composed of tri-calcium penta-aluminate and silica in the proportions stated in U.S.A. Specification 2,423,958 or the material specified below. The oil may be a light oil, the wax may be beeswax, carnauba wax, "Acrawax" (a synthetic wax) or any animal vegetable or mineral wax having a suitable vaporising temperature, and the resin may be polystyrene. In an example 76.92 per cent. by weight of a 200-mesh non-uniform particle size ceramic material containing 88 per 'cent. of Al2O3, 10 per cent. of 3CaO, 5 Al2O3, 2 per cent. of SiO2 and some traces of MgO as impurity is mixed with 13.34 per cent of polystyrene powdered to 200 mesh, 6.92 per cent, of light oil vaporising between 125 and 300‹F. and 2.82 per cent. of beeswax which vaporises above 300‹F. This mixture is ground and moulded cold or at temperatures up to 150‹F. into circular preforms 17. When a preform is to be injectionmoulded it is heated by high frequency to 300- 350‹F., transferred quickly to a pressure chamber 15 and ejected therefrom through sprue 14 into a cold mould 12 (as shown, a spark plug mould having a removable core 13, but it may be a mould for making elbow or thread guides). The mould has air vents remote from the injection inlet. The article is taken from the mould and heated as described above.
