Abstract

<PICT:0706595/III/1> Ivory is stabilized by treating pieces of ivory of any shape with infra-red rays in such a manner that every point of the surface of the pieces receives a substantially equal energizing action, which decreases as the treatment proceeds, and then gradually cooling the pieces. In a preferred apparatus the ivory pieces b, which may be billiard balls, are supported by rods 13 attached to an arm 15 which is suspended from crab 11 which rolls along a rail 12. This rail passes along a tunnel, the first three sections 1a of which contain 8, 6 and 5 infra-red elements respectively, and the last section 4 of which is merely heat insulated. The balls pass through the tunnel in a period of 1 1/2 -3 hours and the crab is so arranged with a counterweight 18 that as the weight of the ball falls below a predetermined value then it is released by rods 13. The movemen of the pieces may be continuous or discontinuous.
