Abstract

In a modification of the method of porcelain enamelling claimed in claim 1 of the parent Specification the aqueous solution employed for depositing nickel contains, as a reducing agent, hypophosphorous acid or a salt thereof, other than sodium hypophosphate, in which the cation is above tin in the electromotive series, and the nickel deposited is from about 0.04 to about 0.25 gram of nickel per square foot of surface area. Hypophosphorous acid and the hypophosphites of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are preferably used, but the hypophosphites of Cd, Zn, and Cr may be used. The compositions of several solutions are given which contain nickel chloride and sodium acetate and, respectively, the hypophosphites of K, Ca, NH4, Mg, Mn, Fe(ous), Al, Ni, Co, and Zn, and hypophosphorous acid.
