Abstract
Good quality organic acid esters of cellulose are prepared from cellulose contaminated with hemicelluloses by first pretreating the cellulose with formaldehyde, or a substance capable of liberating formaldehyde such as paraformaldehyde, and an aliphatic acid of 1-4 carbon atoms, e.g., formic, acetic, propionic or n-butyric acid, or a mixture thereof. Formaldehyde may be applied before, after or simultaneously with the acid and preferably at a temperature below 45 DEG C. The acid may be applied in two or more stages as described in Specification 665,725 and formaldehyde may be present in any stage. The acid may also contain some of or all the catalyst, e.g., sulphuric acid, for the subsequent esterification. Esterification is conducted in known manner with an organic acid anhydride to produce, for example, cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, benzoate, acetate-stearate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate and acetate-crotonate.
