Abstract
706,172. Typewriter. FORD, R. M. Feb. 20, 1951 [Feb. 25, 1950], No. 4898/50. Class 100 (4) A hectograph tape feeding mechanism comprises two supports 13, 14 mounted on a base member 10-12 on which a typewriter may be placed; the support 14 carries a supply spool 18 and the support 13 a take-up mechanism which draws the tape 27 past the typing position. The tape is fixed relatively to the typewriter carriage during letterspacing movement by means of a guide 29 but during a carriage return movement the tape 27 is held by the take-up mechanism and slides relatively to the guide. The parts 11, 12 of the base member are hinged on rods 25 which provide two fixed guides between which is located the typewriter upon a pad 26. Part 12 mounts a column 14a adjustably carrying the support 14, and the spool 18 rotating thereon is formed with a removable upper flange to enable a ribbon to be fitted. The lower flange of the spool is engaged by spring mounted sponge rubber which acts as a friction brake. The tape 27 is fed across the printing line of the machine where it is positioned by a guide member 29 attached to the carriage at 40; the guide member 29 is formed from thin metal sheet with two strips 32, 33, Fig. 5, providing between them a guide channel for the tape. At each end of the guide are a pair of fingers 34 and an intermediate portion 35 around which the tape is threaded so that it holds it so that the tape and carriage move together in a letter-space direction. The guide member 29 may be formed with closed slots in place of the parts 34, 35 and the strips 32, 33 bent to form a channel for the tape 27 ; the lower edge 36 of the guide 29 is provided with a knife edge so that a master sheet will pass in front of the guide. When the carriage travels in the return direction the guide member 29 slides along the tape 27 which is held against backward travel by the take-up mechanism on the support 13. This mechanism comprises a feed roller 47, Fig. 3, freely mounted on a shaft 41 urged in a tape-feeding direction by a weight 44 and pulley 42, the drive from shaft 41 being transmitted to the roller 47 by a ratchet wheel 50 and a pawl on the side of the roller 47. The pulley 42 winds up the weight 44 during a carriage return movement by rotation of a pulley 45 driven by a tape 46 attached to the typewriter carriage. During this direction of rotation of shaft 41, roller 47 is held stationary by a pawl 49 engaging a ratchet 48 fixed to the roller 47. A pressure roller 52 formed of rubber or cork is mounted on a lever arm 56 and urges the tape 27 into contact with the roller 47. The Provisional Specification describes the roller 52 as being mounted on a bracket slidably mounted on the support to facilitate the initial threading of the tape. The bracket is fixed in operative position by a locking screw.
