Abstract
Apparatus for processing the surface of cylindrical objects comprises a rotatable head for engaging the top of the object positioned above a cam-operated lift device having means for supporting such an object with freedom to rotate about its central longitudinal axis, mechanism for automatically operating the lift device by its cam through a cycle of travel including raising the object into engagement with the head for rotation thereby, and processing means (e.g. paint or wax sprayers) adjacent the surfaces of the object for performing a processing operation on at least a portion of the cylindrical portion of the object. As shown, steel drums 10 are fed by a conveyer 12 on to a plate 14 and when on this position are raised by a lifting device into engagement with a rotating head 18 at which time a plurality of paint and/or wax spraying devices 21 are operated to treat the chimes and <PICT:0705188/III/1> <PICT:0705188/III/2> beads of the drum. After the processing is the lift will be operated to return the illegible data to the plate 14 from which it is removed illegible data to the right. The illegible data raised by a cam 44 acting through illegible data follower 42 and a vertical shaft 48. The illegible data cam 44 is mounted on a shaft 64 which is rotated by an electric motor through suitable gearing. The shaft 64 also carries a control cam 125 which actuates a switch to bring into operation at the right time an electric motor 20 driving the head 18 and solenoids which operate the processing devices. The shaft 64 is caused to rotate through only one revolution by means of a switch 128 which co-operates with a starter cam 30 which is also fixedly mounted on the shaft. The switch 128 is in parallel with the manually operated starter switch which is switched off immediately the shaft 64 starts to rotate, the current then passing through switch 128 until this is turned off after one revolution of the shaft 64 by the action of the cam 130.
