Abstract
704,910. Making wheels.' KELSEY-HAYES, WHEEL CO. Sept. 10, 1951 [Sept. 11, 1950], No. 21313/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Bending; stamping.-In a method of making wheel rims having tyre bead retaining flanges 1, Fig. 3, and an intermediate well 3 a cylindrical blank 7 having a diameter intermediate of the bead seats 2 and the well base 4 is first radially expanded at its edges 17 between axially moving dies, then rolled to further radially expand regions 26 near the edges and simultaneously contract its intermediate well forming portion 24 and finally engaged between axially moving dies which form the final shape of the rim. In the first stage conical shaped axially movable dies 8, 9, Fig. 4, form flared portions 16, 17 without expanding the intermediate cylindrical portion 10 of the blank In the second stage a pair of rollers 18, 19, Fig. 5, radially contract a well forming portion 24 and radially expand portions 23, 25 between the edges and the well forming portion 24. In the final stage the blank is first gripped between a pair of dies 27, 28 shaving opposed semipair of dies 27, 28 having opposed semicylindrical cavities shaped to the outer face of the wheel rim and is then. contracted axially inwardly and expanded radially outwardly between axially moving dies 29, 30 shaped to the inner face of the wheel rim. The edge forming portions 31, 32 of the dies 29, 30 are recessed to permit of formation of a lip.
