Abstract

In a bearing or like assembly, a tungsten surface is provided with a film of tungsten disulphide which is created by the action of a sulphiding agent at a reacting temperature. The film may be formed before use of the assembly, or during use at temperatures of 400 DEG C. and above. The assembly may be packed with a grease or lubricant containing a sulphiding agent, or it may be operated in the presence of a sulphiding agent such as a sulphiding gas or volatile mercaptan diluted in an inert carrier gas. The tungsten may contain less than 20 per cent. of nickel or cobalt, or it may contain molybdenum as described in Specification 704,761.
