Abstract

A quick-drying paint for spraying on highways to provide durable reflective traffic markers consists of a quick-drying drying-oil base thinned by a volatile solvent, containing a stably suspended admixture of titanium dioxide pigment, extender pigment, transparent glass beads having an average diameter of 3-10 mm. and a small proportion of dissolved lecithin in amount sufficient to stabilize the suspension of glass beads, the pigment volume ratio being in the range of about 25 to 60 per cent. and the proportion of glass beads being about 3 to 8 pounds per gallon of bead-free paint. In an example the varnish base consists of tung oil, bodied dehydrated castor oil, oil-soluble rosin-modified phenol-aldehyde varnish resin and naphtha. Extender pigment may be powdered magnesium silicate or precipitated calcium carbonate. Lithopone or other suitable pigments in part may replace the titanium dioxide pigment. Lecithin is used as a solution consisting of 70 parts of crude soy bean lecithin (65 per cent. phosphatides, 35 per cent. soy bean oil) in 30 parts of a mixture of naphtha and xylol and the final paint can contain 1/2 per cent. to 2 1/2 per cent. crude lecithin relative to the total weight of pigments and glass beads. Animal lecithin may be used. Metallic driers such as cobalt, lead and manganese naphthenates may be added. U.S.A.
