Abstract

703,919. Unwinding cable drums. SOC. GENERALE D'ENTREPRISES. Dec. 1, 1950 [Dec. 1 1949], No. 29443/50. Class 78 (5) Unwinding apparatus enabling cables to be paid out under mechanical tension comprises (Fig. 4) at least one drum 4 comprising a plurality of discs 9, 10 each having at least one groove C, B for the reception of the cable, these discs being connected together by means which allow relative rotational displacement of the discs so as to reduce the slipping of the cable in the said grooves, the or each drum also comprising a braking pulley associated with means for braking the respective drum. As shown, Fig. 1, the cable passes over roller 70 between rollers 71, 72, between pulleys 73 and 74, and is wound round and between drums 4 and 5, emerging either at 88<SP>11</SP> or 88, the whole being carried on wheels 2 or, where required, bv jacks 3. Pulley 73, Fig. 7, is carried by shaft 76 in bearings 77, 78 carried by springs 79, 80 whilst pulley 74 is 'carried by shaft 75 slidable in guides 85, Fig. 1, and having brake drum 81 engageable with adjustable brake band 82, the two pulleys being thus separable for introduction of the cable there-between. Each winding drum, Fig. 4, is provided with integral brake drum 39. It is also provided with and carries integral rope groove D and rotatable annular discs 9, 10 carrying grooves C, B lined with friction material 18, the discs being pressed between friction ring 19 fixed to the drum and steel ring 24 pressed by adjustable spring- pressed sleeves 26 arranged around the periphery. Relative rotation of the discs lessens the relative movement of cable and drum. The drum shaft is made in two parts to allow disengagement of cable. The intensity of the braking of band 40, Fig. 5, having shoes 39 against drum 4 is measured by gauge 68 which measures the pressure in cell 64, the brake being applied by handle 52 through nut 48 on threaded spindle 49, and through lever 46, and the brake tension displacing spindle 49 against the cell.
