Abstract

Lengths of vegetable textile fibres, such as ramie, flax, hemp, jute, urena, ambary and asclepias, are subjected to a chemical setting process which comprises a first treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali containing an amine salt of palmitic acid as an emulsifying agent and a subsequent treatment with an aqueous solution containing the same substances as in the first treatment and in addition an oxidizing agent. Preferably the materials are immersed successively in two separate treating baths. The alkali used may be caustic soda or potash and the amine palmitate may be derived from a primary, secondary, or tertiary amine or from a quaternary ammonium base, e.g. propanolamine, morpholine or tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide. The oxidizing agent may be hydrogen peroxide or sodium peroxide, or a perborate or other per-salt. The treatment is effected on green-scutched lengths, i.e. lengths freed from the ligneous parts of the stem. Preferably the material is washed between the two chemical treatments. The alkali may be present in a concentration of 0.5-2 per cent. and the concentration of the amine palmitate may be 0.5-5 per cent. by weight of the solution. Each of the two treatments may be effected at 80-100 DEG C. for 20-60 minutes. After the second treatment the fibres may be washed in water, dried, flexed, and submitted to further treatment, e.g. a mechanical de-gumming treatment by passing them between fluted rollers.
