Abstract

703,657. Mining machines. JOY-SULLIVAN, Ltd., and MARR, D. June 16, 1952 [June 25, 1951], No. 14998/51. Class 68(1) In a mining machine one or more picks 1 are pivoted for movement about an axis longitudinal of the blocks 5 to which they are attached and the direction of movement of the chain, so that in the cutting position they are positioned at right angles to the plane of the chain but can be rotated into said plane to avoid obstruction by static parts of the machine. The pick is mounted at about its centre on a pivot pin 4 which is removably maintained in a bore in the block by a retaining pin 6, for example, passing through a co-axial bore in the pivot pin, the ends of the retaining pin being bent over to lie in recesses 6 in the block. The pick has at one end a cutting tip 2 and at the other a cam surface 3 which, on engagement with a cam surface 22 on the jib, urges the pick positively into the cutting position, a position which it normally takes up due to gravity when freely supported. Other cams 17, 18, 20 positioned on the machine and jib, as required, engage the pick to lift it into the plane of movement of the chain so as to be free from obstruction by the static parts of the machine.
