Abstract

703,562. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 12, 1952 [April 14, 1951], No. 8738/51. Class 42 (1) Apparatus for making welded seams in overlapped films of thermoplastic material comprises an endless flexible band 5, of a material which will not adhere to the film, which is power driven in a path which will carrv it into contact with the film over a sufficient length to move the apparatus over the overlapped films after the fashion of an endless-track vehicle, and a roller 29, provided with means for heating it to welding temperature, resting on that part of the band which comes in contact with the film under adequate pressure to make a welded joint in the film, the length of band in contact with the film behind the roller being such that under operating conditions the film will have cooled sufficiently to solidify before the band leaves it. As shown, the endless band 5, which may be of poly-tetrafluoro-ethylene or thin phosphor-bronze, is guided by flanged track rollers 3, 4 and is driven by feed rollers 9, 11 geared to a motor 15, Fig. 1. Roller 11 and a tension roller 13 are spring-pressed against the band, the pressure of roller 11 being adjustable by a control lever 22. The heated roller 29 rotates on a fixed spindle 28 carried by a pivoted fork 27, and can be lifted off the band by means of a cam 34 rotatable by a hand lever 37. The periphery of roller 29 has as many ribs as weld lines to be produced (two ribs 30, 31 are shown, Fig. 2) and the roller is heated internally by radiation from an electric heating element. A blower 42 driven by motor 15 discharges a jet of cooling air through a tube 43 onto the band in front of the rear track roller 4. The overlapped edges of the layers 6 of film to be seamed are raised above the level of the bench or the like, on which the films are spread, by a support 8, Fig. 2, to which the films will not adhere, e.g. of linoleum.
