Abstract
703,462. Making piston rings; coiling helices. FEY, J. Jan. 18, 1952, No. 1546/52. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] Work-holders.-In a process for the manufacture of helical rings, particularly piston rings, spring steel strip in an edge-wise position is drawn by a revolving bending roller into helical grooves in the latter, the width and depth of the grooves corresponding to the thickness and at least the width of the strip respectively. Strip S, tensioned by a spindle 6 operating braking plates 6a, is drawn into the helical groove 3 of a bending roller 2, a sleeve 7, which surrounds the roller and closes the groove during winding on, being attached to and moving transversely to the strip with a support 5. Removal of the coil from the roller is effected, on reverse rotation of the roller, by an eye 13, Fig. 6. The coil is then centred in a cylinder 15 and supported on a shaft 18, Fig. 7, and clamped by end plates 16 whilst it is externally ground, and is next clamped in a sleeve 22, Fig. 8, and cut into individual rings by a grinding disc 20. The groove 3, Fig. 5, is inclined to give a frusto-conical form to the strip and may be of a width to accommodate two strips 4a, 4b or more. Rings may comprise more than one turn.
