702,686. Making tubes. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd. July 8, 1952 [June 11, 1951], No. 13847/51. Class 83 (4) In a method of producing metal tubes &c. comprising treating a cup-shaped billet in a first push bench drawing apparatus having dies or rolls and then treating the hollow thus formed in a second push bench drawing apparatus, the drive of the two apparatuses is affected by a single prime mover and in such a manner that, while the mandrel of the first apparatus is being fed forward during a drawing operation, the second apparatus is being returned to its initial position, and vice versa. Push benches 1, 2, each comprising a driving rack 3, 4 and a die bed 9, 10, are operated by a D.C. electric motor 11 through gears 13, 14, 15, 17. The treatment of the hollow in the second push bench 2 is carried out at a speed greater than that in the bench 1, the ratio of the speeds of the racks 3, 4 being proportional to the lengths of their travel distances. Pinch rolls 19 may be opened to allow the billet 22 to pass after treatment in bench 1, and then closed to carry the mandrel 23 out of the die bed 9. The mandrel and hollow are then shifted laterally for treatment in bench 2.
