Abstract

702,347. Knot-tying devices. MELLOR. BROMLEY & CO., Ltd. June 12, 1952 [June 25, 1951], No. 15024/51. Class 112 A mechanical device for tying together two ends of yarn or the like, particularly by the knots described, in Specification 702,348, comprises a body with spaced sides slotted to receive the yarn ends, a hooked instrument reciprocable and turnable about its axis for forming the knot, means for severing the ends, means for pulling the ends at opposite sides of the knot to tighten it, and a manually operable member for initiating conjoint actuation of the various devices; means are preferably provided for holding the yarn ends during operation. The device shown comprises side-plates 1, 2 (the latter being removed in Fig. 2) connected by a number of bolts forming spindles for parts of the mechanism and by webs 3, 4 which support a hollow shaft 15 carrying a latch needle 13; the shaft 15, slidably mounted in the web 3 and on a fixed pin P, has a series of circumferential ridges 17 forming rack teeth whereby the shaft can be moved longitudinally by a pinion 18, and these ridges are cut to form pinion teeth 20, Fig. 5, for rotation of the shaft by a pinion 21 (omitted in Fig. 1) mounted on the web 3. The pinion 18 is rotated from a toothed sector 32 on a lever pivoted at 9 and formed with a forked part 34 embracing a pin 35 which is carried by an arm 36 pivoted at 7 and engages a cam groove 38 in a cam 22 fixed on a spindle 5; a thumb-lever 27, pivoted at 8 and spring-biased, carries a toothed sector 26 engaging a pinion on the spindle 5 to rotate the cam 22 and another cam on the same spindle which actuates the pinion 21 through similar mechanism, the lever with the toothed sector 43, Fig. 5, in this case running below the spindle 5 and intermediate pinions 40 being provided. The plate 1 is cut away to form two yarnreceiving notches 49 which are for the most part masked by an offset plate 51 serving to keep the yarns in place, and adjacent to these notches are blades 62 of a cutter 60 which is pivoted at 61 and is actuated by a lobe on the cam 22 through a spring-biased lever 63. The plate 2 is provided with corresponding notches which lead the respective yarns between pairs of spring-closed gripping-members 52 pivotally mounted at 54 and spring-urged to lie against the plate 2; at the end of the knot-forming operation the end of the toothed sector 26 on the thumb-lever 27 actuates a lever 67, Fig. 5, with a cam tail which engages a lug 55 on the grippers to move them to the dotted-line position and thus to pull the yarns so as to tighten the knot, which then lies on a protuberance 71 formed on the inside of the plate 2 between its thread-notches. In operation, the hook 13 engages the nearer yarn and rotates to form a loop in it, moves forward through the loop to engage the other yarn and draw a bight of it through the loop, and then moves forward through this bight to draw bights of both yarns through it. According to the Provisional Specification the mechanism may be actuated by a spring when a trigger is released, the mechanism then being reset for another operation.
