Class 106(5) A liquid-sampling rod comprises an outer tube 1 pierced by a straight or spiral slit or a spiral series of holes 5, an inner tube 6 slidable within the outer tube, a cap 2 closing the lower end of the outer tube and a compressible sealing ring or disc 4 fitted between the cap and the end of the outer tube. To take samples from a cask, the rod is inserted through the bunghole at an angle, to enable its closed end to reach one end of the cask while resting on the bottom, the inner tube is withdrawn to uncover the holes 5 and the rod is swept to the other end of the cask so that a representative sample of the contents may be retained in the inner tube 6 by pushing it right down on to the sealing pad 4. The inner tube can be locked in the sealed position by means such as a bayonet fastening 7, 8, handles 9 and 10 being provided for relatively rotating the two tubes. To ensure entry of liquid near the bottom of the outer tube, a pair of opposite holes are provided there and at least one of them registers with one or more of several holes 3 in the cap 2.
